7 Popular SR&ED myths and truths

And how to leverage them to your advantage

Myth 1: SR&ED is hard to pronounce

Truth: It's easy. Pronounce it like "shred", as in "Quick, shred the documents before the CRA catches us laundering money on private islands!"

Now you'll remember how to pronounce it.

Myth 2:  SR&ED is complicated

Truth: SR&ED is very simple. It goes like this:

The government wants to help your company grow. They will reimburse you substantially for your valid R&D efforts.

We will show you how easy it is to get the money you already earned.

We will even teach you how to do it yourself.

Myth 3:  You need to be profitable to claim SR&ED

Truth: You don't need to be profitable.

Let's say you raise 200k of startup funding and spend 100K on research. Your sales are $0, profit is $0.

The program will give you back $65K of what you spent.

Myth 4:  SR&ED auditors will call out our sloppy accounting practices

Truth: That's not their job.

SR&ED auditors care about the SR&ED claim and want to know that you spent the research money that you say you did. Getting involved in your overall accounting practices is not their job and they don't have time for it.

Myth 5:  Applying for SR&ED is difficult

Truth: It's actually pretty easy and the ROI is huge.

You need to write just a few short paragraphs about your research, and fill out less than 20 fields with numbers on the tax form.

Myth 6:  We don't qualify

Truth: Many companies think they don't qualify.
